Brands live in the everyday

There comes a moment in every project where the strategy is complete, the positioning is clear and the messaging feels just right. On paper, the brand is exactly where it should be. Yet, I often find myself asking a question: what happens next?

The next is where brands earn their reputation — in the everyday. The next is in the way a guest is welcomed before they become a loyal customer, in the confidence of your team members, in the consistency of a leader communicating clear expectations. The next is in the details no one would traditionally call branding, but they’re also the moments people remember most. The next is the everyday.

I’ve come to believe that branding and operations have never been separate conversations but we’ve chosen to treat them that way. A remarkable brand doesn’t stop at what people see, it continues through what they experience.

I’ve had the opportunity to spend time alongside leadership teams, not only discussing strategy but also observing their business in motion. Walking dining rooms, standing in automotive service bays, sitting through new team member training, listening to conversations between teams and their guests. Those moments reinforce something I have believed all along: a brand is protected by the people who bring it to life every single day.‍ ‍

This is why I find myself talking about service standards, team & guest experience and consistency. It’s not that marketing doesn’t matter but it is that marketing can only amplify what is already true. If the real life experience doesn’t support the brand promise, the strongest branding in the world will eventually lose credibility.

This is why I enjoy helping business create thoughtful alignment between what they say, what they believe and what people actually experience. The next here is helping teams understand that every interaction is part of the brand story. The everyday is the brand story.

When strategy and operations people start working together, in tandem, something changes. The brand starts feeling like something the company lives rather than something they talk about. In my experience, remarkable brands are built there — in the everyday.
