Beyond the brand
One of my favorite parts of this work has very little to do with branding; it's the conversation before we begin. The one where someone swallows hard, digs deep and forgets they're speaking to a consultant and starts telling me their story. Those are the moments I remember, not because they lead to better marketing but because they show me something far more important.
The why.
Why they started, why they stayed, why this really matters to them and therefore, why they continue to show up when the days are long and hard or exciting and joyful.
Every time I take a deep breath, slow down and ask why, I’m reminded why I do what I do. People light up, their voice changes and suddenly, the conversation isn’t about the business, it’s about the people and the feelings behind it. That’s where the real work begins.
I’ve always been fascinated by people. I think the least interesting thing about someone is what they do. Conversely, the most interesting thing is why they do it — what excites them, makes them nervous/happy/sad/joyful/stressed/fulfilled, what is it that they hope to build and what legacy are the creating without realizing it.
That’s likely why I’ve never been particularly interested in surface branding and wrapping things up in a pretty bow just for the sake of saying I could. Sure, logos and websites and messaging matters. However, none of those things exist without people. Without someone’s dream, without their story or without the risks they took to get to where they are, without someone’s believe they could create something worth sharing with the world.
I’m convinced that’s why I love this work so much. Every person and project introduces me to another story, another family, another entrepreneur and another team trying to build something meaningful. I don’t take any of that lightly. Being invited into someone’s business is a privilege and being trusted to help shape how that business is experienced is an even greater one.
Over time, I’ve realized something. The conversations that I thought were helping me understand the brand were actually helping me understand the people. The more I understand the people, the more authentic the brand becomes. Remarkable brands don’t begin with strategy, they begin with an idea, a purpose and conviction, with people willing to care deeply about what they’re building. Strategy gives that story a voice.
Maybe that’s why I believe every remarkable brand begins with a conversation. Not because it’s here on my website but because it’s true. I rarely walk away from a conversation thinking about a logo or marketing campaign but I always walk away thinking about the people. And somehow, that’s always been enough.
So, my parting perspective: the next time someone asks you about your business, don’t start with what you do. Start with why it matters to you.
